True Horror

There's no shortage of horror to go around at Halloween time or any other time of year, but did you know that there are a lot of horror books written about true stories? Sure, you get books like the Amityville Horror and The Exorcist that are said to be based on real events (the Exorcist hospital is in St. Louis where I live and it's a popular local story), but proving that they're real is something altogether different.

There are several horror novels that ARE based on real events, though. This list contains six of them, ranging from Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me to Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. Some of the books are even firsthand accounts, like Rule's, while others are mostly based on research. Still, if you're one of those people who feels safer reading a horror novel, believing it's not ever possible, this might be just the list of books to get you actually scared for once. For the record, I'm not like you; my imagination thinks that anything is possible, particularly when I'm trying to sleep, and I'm certin there's going to be a finger poking out of my sink drain one day.
