Having read Cora Carmack's Losing It series, I was excited to see that the author is also churning out YA novels these days! I like her style and characters, which is everything to me in a novel. If I don't like the characters, I just can't get into it, which has happened with many popular books I tried so hard to enjoy. Having just finished the first in the Stormheart series, Roar, I have some mixed feelings.
The book was mostly fantastic--great characters, intrigue and a unique situation in a world where storms have hearts and threaten civilization, requiring people to handle them to keep others safe. The protagonist goes on a quest to change her fate, the guy she's into is a little annoyingly protective but otherwise wholesome and there is lots of cool magical stuff going on. That said, the villain seems out of left field (I'm hoping it will be a couple of guesses I've got so it stays connected to the story), the friend was treated incredibly poorly and the end of the book felt so flat, without any clarification or closure. Granted, it's a first novel in a series, but it just fizzled after something big went down and now decisions are being made that don't make a lot of sense.
The next book will be out in August and I can't wait to read it. I hope it jumps back into action quickly like the first book did. Have you read Roar? What did you think?
