Meredith Russo is an incredible writer who has endured a lot in her life, and my family has found her to be an inspiring author. Then the news of her abuse allegations came out and I got sick reading about them. I know many women who've been in abusive situations like this and to think that Russo may have acted this way toward her wife is disturbing, to say the least.
It looks like Russo admitted to a lot, then said a lot of what happened didn't, so none of us may ever know everything that happened, but I do know that it's really hard for me to separate the artist from the art, and I'm not sure I can read anything else by this author. It's been years and I still don't want to watch Mel Gibson movies, and I won't ever watch anything with Kevin Spacey in it again. But I know many people who say they can separate the art from the artist, and while I can kind of see that if the artist lived hundreds of years ago, I just can't apply it to today.
How about you? What do you think of appreciating the art but not supporting the artist and why?
