Heartless

How the Red Queen Was Born

This last weekend I devoured Marissa Meyers' book, Heartless. Meyers is the author of the Lunar Chronicles, one of my favorite YA series, so I knew I'd enjoy this book, but I also went in knowing it was destined for tragedy, as it was a prequel for a villain we all know well. And tragedy it had.

The book is about Catherine, a young woman who is destined to marry the king of Hearts even though she has eyes for something else: owning her own bakery with her best friend and the court jester. It's clear that her dreams are doomed from the start and we quickly learn how she became the villain of Alice in Wonderland. We also learn about more creepy monsters, the backstories of several other characters and how things came to be the way they are in Wonderland.

The book lacked a bit of the world building we saw in TLC, but to be fair the author's working with characters and scenarios that have been previously published by Lewis Carrol, so she wrote assuming we'd all be familiar with the territory. There are a few other issues I have with the book as well, but overall it was a really fun read that I really enjoyed.

What are you reading this week? Have you read Heartless? Share your thoughts in the chat.
