Take advantage of your hometown

When you homeschool, like I do, it can be fun to insert a field trip into the schedule at least once per month. You don't have to spend a ton of money or even travel outside of the state to do this.

Just yesterday, I took my two girls and one of my daughter's best friends (she has two) to the local Naval Air Station Museum. My daughter's friends are also homeschooled. Honestly, I didn't even know this museum existed until a friend told me about it. It's only 15 minutes away from my house.
The museum was filled with planes, helicopters and even a few jeeps that the children could touch, climb in and press as many buttons as they wanted. This is my kind of museum! There was a 1940s room and plenty of educational information throughout the entire museum. There was even a science section at the end.

I enjoyed seeing the airplane from the movie Top Gun, and the kids really liked the control tower. They could actually communicate to people inside the tower from a video/audio booth at the bottom. Of course, the kids were also excited about the virtual flying game, even though they all crashed their planes.

Even if you don't have a Naval Air Station Museum near you, you probably have a lot of other field trip possibilities. If you need ideas, or think you may have overlooked an educational opportunity in your area, call your local Chamber of Commerce. They can give you some suggestions.
