"I Heart Female Orgasms" Book Review

Let's just start by saying that "I Heart Female Orgasm" is no "I Heart Huckabees".  Before I even opened the book, I knew I would have a hard time taking the advice of the authors seriously primarily because of the cheese-factor in their photo. They also look like sex is something they do more reading about and talking about than they do first-hand, but as we all know from the band-camp girl in American Pie, looks can be deceiving.

"I Heart Female Orgasm" is a strange concoction of practical advice, trivia, and meaningless space-fillers. The practical advice contains specific information on which sexual positions stimulate the clitoris and g-spot and gives how-to-find guides on the g-spot and a-spot (the a-spot is the male's version of the g-spot) and information on female sex toys. Other practical advice includes tips for preparing for oral sex, and some recommendations on positions to try including, "Throne", "Edge O' The Bed", and "On Your Knees". The advice for males in the oral sex department is sub-titled, "How to be a Cunning Linguist". How cute.

Samplings of the trivia in "I Heart Female Orgasm" include the fact that up until 2003, oral sex was illegal in ten states, the fact that Bill Clinton did not reciprocate oral sex with Monica Lewinsky because she was "on her period", or the strange fact that clitoral size does not matter.

The useless space-fillers are scattered throughout the book in the margins and charts. While some of it (largely the trivia) is interesting, much of it seems like a mis-guided attempt to fill extra pages when most of the important information has already been given. In the not-so-cleverly titled "Advanced Penisilogy" Section, for example, the authors give a chart detailing the pretty self-explanatory differences between "Sex with Your Hand Versus Intercourse with a Woman".  The differences listed include the fact that one involves an "imaginary partner" and one involves sex with a naked woman. Wow! Really, you don't say? It also gives advice for men fearful of women faking orgasms and for men worried about their penis size. Other sections just sound plain silly. "Ever wonder about the difference between coming and having an orgasm?" I think the only people seriously wondering that are non-native English speakers or those who are definitely too young to be reading this book.

"I Heart Female Orgasm" also attempts to be a user-fits-all type of guide targeted towards women who have had orgasms, but would like to have more orgasms, women who have never had orgasms, men who would like to give women orgasms, and women who would like to give women orgasms. Basically, the only group excluded is (not surprisingly) the gay male. While there is some relevant information in the book, the irrelevant info that stretches out over the 250 page+ books makes the book less worthwhile as a whole.
